Week 1 Introduction: It's Jess!!

It seems as though every time I introduce myself to people they quote the theme song from TV show "New Girl," so for all intense in purposes I am Jess.

Well I am now into my senior year at OU and will be graduating May 2015. I am a Communication major and I am from Houston, Texas. What else is there really? I could tell you about my not so great summer internship or what my favorite color is (it’s blue, by the way) or I could tell you more about who I actually am and the things I want to accomplish.

I am a person who likes to make lists, whether it is of the groceries I need, the reading and assignments I have to do, the places I want to eat, or the places I want to see before I kick the bucket (or graduate). So here I have decided to tell you some of my lists.

Travel. It has always been my dream, nay goal, to travel all around the world. I always said that I want to go to at least every continent, and yes that includes Antarctica. But there are so many other countries I want to visit than just one per continent, so here is my list of countries I would like to one day visit: Canada, Peru, Russia, Italy (again), Greece, Spain, England, Germany, Ireland, France, Egypt, Israel, Japan, South Africa, Brazil, Antarctica, Australia, Costa Rica, and New Zealand.

Music. I love almost every type of music out there, all except for screamo. I like my traditional hip-hops and pops, as well as my Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin classics. Queen, Billy Joel, and Led Zeppelin are all great too. I even love classical music by Bach and Beethoven. However, several of my friends say that I have a very unique type of music as well, so here is my list of great bands/artists that are not up there with the rest: High Highs, Youngblood Hawke, Iron and Wine, Marble Sounds, Noah and the Whale, Fiest, Middle East, Freelance Whales, Bahamas, The Lumineers, Great Lake Swimmers, The Perishers, Two Door Cinema Club, The Civil Wars, and The Weepies.

That’s just a little bit about me. I’m funny and smart but I don’t always fit into the conventional box of what one would think based on their first appearance of me. I am who I am, and I is who I is.

  1. I, too, am a list maker. For me, it helps keep all those things from floating around in my head. I also love to travel! When I've visited other countries, I've almost always come home with such expanded world views. I love that feeling. Your music taste definitely sounds individualized to you. I love the electronic sound that Two Door Cinema Club and Freelance Whales have.

  2. I just finished watching New Girl, so that is exactly the first thing I thought of. Traveling is truly good for the soul and it is terrific that you have those big goals. They do say that the only way to eat an elephant is a bite at a time. That is an interesting mix of bands; I recently saw Iron and Wine and enjoyed them so I may have to look up some of the others!

  3. Hi again, Jess - sorry if a comment got repeated a few times here. I had some odd trouble leaving a comment at your blog... but I'm trying a different browser - hopefully this will work!

  4. Okay, that worked... so here is the real comment! :-)
Oh, Jess, would it be okay if I changed your name in the blog directory...? That would actually be great since Jessica Murphy is in this class: I cannot even just distinguish you by first name and last initial... and Jessica Ma. just seems a little weird! I'll go update the blog director to Jess if that's okay with you! And THANK YOU for the Shel Silverstein poem and graphic... absolutely delightful! I am going to save that for my files. Maybe you could even do a Storybook where you tell the stories in Shel Silverstein style: what fun that would be! I hope you will enjoy this class and the way it lets you travel - by means of your imagination - to countries all over the world. And then maybe you will get to visit them in a more conventional way in the future!

  5. Well now I have the New Girl intro stuck in my head so thanks for that hahaha. On a more serious note you do have, in my opinion, a good taste in music, I listen to and enjoy several of the artists and bands you mentioned so I'll have to check out some of the ones I don't recognize that you listed. Also while I don't like making lists due to me not being very organized, I do enjoy reading lists so I understand your love for them.

  6. Hey Jess! Being a New Girl fan, I would probably of done the same thing as everyone else with the, "It's Jess!" comment! Anyways, I think that it is awesome that you want to go out and see some many places and new cultures! I have been to a few of the places that you mentioned wanting to go see and they are BEAUTIFUL! You should definitely add Scotland to your list though. It has by far been my favorite country out of the eight I have been to thus far in life!

  7. Love your intro! I am actually almost finished with season 2 of New Girl and its probably the funniest show I've ever watched. I also would love to travel the world some day and see places like Greece, New Zealand, Brazil, and so many more! Hopefully you will be able to live that dream one day and visit all of the continents. Congrats on making it to senior year and also being a year away from graduating! I am senior as well but I will be taking an extra year next year.

  8. Hey Jess! I'm Jessica :) I loved hearing you want to travel. I absolutely love seeing other cultures and places. A year ago I studied abroad in Beijing for a semester and I've visited England, France, Germany, Scotland and Costa Rica on family vacations. They were all so beautiful and fun in their own ways. I would love to go more places as well, so hopefully I'll get that chance after I graduate. Good luck this semester, cheers to senior year!

  9. Hi, Jess! When i read your title, New Girl was the first thing that I thought of! I make lists also, for everything. I'll often be going through an old not book and find an old list somewhere in the back. I also want to travel often when I graduate. Most of your list are places I want to go too (but I think I'll skip Antarctica). I went to Australia a couple of years ago. It was so fun and beautiful! I'd definitely recommend it! I hope to go back someday. I hope your semester is going well so far! Good luck on everything!

  10. Hey Jessica, I really enjoyed reading your introduction! I found it both interesting and completely agree with your last sentence. I was a very big fan of Shel Silverstien when I was in Middle School. From your comment on my introduction, I would agree that you are someone that I would like to hang out with as well. I love the fact that you have such a wide variety of music that you like to listen to. I don't think my repertoire is a expansive as yours, but I like to think I have a large spectrum that I pull from. You could probably show me a bunch of music that I haven't heard of that I would like very much. I hope that you are able to travel to all the different places on your list!

  11. Jess!

I didn't know you were in this class! I completely understand the "not so great" summer internship. I'm glad that you are in this class though. I can't believe it took me this long to realize it.

I had no idea you were so into traveling. Seeing the world is such an awesome thing and I really hope that one day you get to go to all of those places. I hope you have a great rest of your semester and enjoy your senior year!

  12. Hey there!
Um, never seen Lost Girl, so the reference was lost on me. Count me down for one person who doesn't do that! I'm graduating this year too, so good luck on that. Traveling is something I'd love to do too, but I hate airplanes way too much for it. I'll most likely just stay state-side. I totally get the lists thing - I even color code mine sometimes. Gotten out of the habit recently but I can write them with the best. And your music taste looks phenomenal, good on you!

  13. When I saw the title of your introduction, the first thing I thought of was New Girl. So when you first mentioned that, I started laughing because it was like you read my mind. I find it very interesting that you make lists. Are you a very Type A personality then, or is that just a small habit you have? Traveling is always great, and I would definitely suggest Ireland! I would also like to say, that I really appreciate all the types of music you listed. I am like you and pretty much like anything except screamo! Anyways, it was great getting to learn a little bit about you! I hope you have a great semester!

  14. I actually hate make lists haha. Well, maybe not hate. I'm just really bad at, especially grocery lists. I can never think of what I need or want to get at the store so I just hope I remember once I get there! I want to travel a lot too. One of my professors last semester told us that after we graduate we should all take two years off and travel the world before we start working. Wouldn't that be awesome?

  15. I love how you started out your introduction because I am obsessed with New Girl. Schmidt just makes the show great and now all I can think about is the intro to the show where she says "It's Jess!" But I can see how maybe that would get annoying. I love making lists as well. The sense of accomplishment when you get to cross something off the list is why I love it so much. I am also pretty scatterbrained and am constantly busy so if I do not have something to remind me, I often leave things half-done. I also have a list of places I want to visit ranked in order, with Greece being at the top. As well as a list of places to eat while I travel. Yup, you could say I like lists too. I am not as adventurous with my music taste as you are so maybe I will have to look up some of the bands you listed. I also love that you included a Shel Silverstein poem at the end. I LOVED "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and read out of it every night when I was younger. I will probably have to pull it out and start reading some now after seeing this and being reminded how great his poems are.

  16. Hi Jessica! Your list of places to travel sounds amazing! I share the same passion for seeing new places. The only place I've ever been on your list for any extended period of time is Australia. I was in Sydney it was completely amazing. I love the graphic and quote that you have at the bottom of your introduction too!

  17. Hey Jess, I'm finishing up for the class and just wanted to thank you for your comments on my blog as well as my storybook. Your insight was helpful and very much appreciated!

I failed to post a video of my dominance in corn hole, but still welcome all challengers.
